Kavalam Narayana Panikkar (b. 28 April, 1928) belongs to a village named Kavalam in Alleppey district. He started writing poetry when very young and his poetry is specially noted for its rural idiom. He entered theatre in 1964 inspired by folk and classical traditions and has done considerable research in the folk and classical arts of Kerala. Author of nineteen Malayalam plays, he has translated English and Sanskrit plays into Malayalam. His own plays, SAKSHI (1964), DAIVATHAR (1973), THIRUVAZ- HITHAN (1974), BHAGVADAJJUKAM (1976) (which is a Malayalam translation of the famous Sanskrit Prahasana), AVANAVANKATAMPA (1975), OTTAYAN (1977), KARIMKUTTY (1982), ΚΟΥΜΑ (1986), and TIRUMUDI (1988), have been successfully staged.
