It gives me pleasure to publish the book‘J.D.Salinger and Bhalchndra Nemade: A Comparative Study’ which was originally my Ph.D thesis submitted to Shivaji University, Kolhapur for the degree of Doctorate. J.D.Salinger belongs to American literary tradition and Bhalchndra Nemade to Marathi literary tradition.
J.D.Salinger (1919-2010) was a participant in the Second World War and had traumatic experiences of war. He was rebellious and criticized false standards in the contemporary American society.
Bhalchndra Nemade (b.1938) is famous for his nativist literary stance and claims his position in Marathi and therefore Indian literary tradition.
However no writer can be free from the literary or cultural influences outside his own literary and cultural tradition. J.D.Salinger was influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism. Similarly Bhalchndra Nemade as a Professor in English Literature was under the influence of Western literary and criticism. He must be praised for his views in nativism.
I hope this book will make readers inquisitive in the comparative study and literary influences and borrowings that happen due to exposure to outside one’s own literary tradition.
